Since it is practically summer and if you are like me and my family, you will be spending loads of time outside and in the sun! So, to kick off the season I am going to be covering the topic of sunscreen. I have taken the liberty of enlisting my amazing children to be guinea pigs for me, to test out four of the top rated mineral sunscreens!
For years now, there has been a hot debate between the holistic community and the FDA about the effects of the chemicals found in traditional sunscreen. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) the top chemicals to avoid in sunscreen are oxybenzone, octinoxate/ ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene. Essentially, if you can’t pronounce it, it doesn’t belong on your skin! On May 6th, 2019 the FDA finally released a study stating that the chemicals found in the sunscreen were entering the bloodstream at unsafe levels. The levels of the chemicals continued to rise after the constituents of the study applied sunscreen for four or more days. Scary! (read article here.)
Your skin is your bodies largest organ and deserves the same respect as the organs on the inside. It seems silly to me to be paying attention to what we eat and care less about what we put on our bodies! If you are anything like me, I prefer my products to be like the people I surround myself with- nontoxic! So, without further delay, I have listed my findings of the top -rated mineral sunscreens below.
4. Tropical Sands Broad Spectrum Sunscreen, SPF 50 ($21.95 on Amazon, 5.4 fl oz)
I really wish that I had some amazing things to say about this mineral sunscreen, but I don’t. When applying to my daughter, it took 15 minutes to rub in and she was still completely white! It also took lots of bribing to calm the crying because she said “the sunscreen is making me smell horrible!” (insert 5 year old dramatic meltdown here). Once I finally got her outside and into the water, it came right off in the pool. It was dripping down her legs and her face (over course right into her eyes). So, if you are wanting to look like the Night King and smell like his army, this is the mineral sunscreen for you! If you have children, would like to look like the living and prefer something that stays in place, I would highly recommend you look at some of the other products in this article!
3. True Natural sunscreen, SPF 50 (EWG Certified) ($17.07 on Amazon, 3.4 fl oz)
This sunscreen is an improvement from the one previously, but it still left some room for improvement. The texture was a bit easier to work with and it did rub in a bit better, but it still left a white tint. Once the kids got in the pool, it actually stayed in place! It actually took me applying some elbow grease at bath time to get it scrubbed off of them! The day we used this brand it was 91 degrees outside. The kids had been in and out of the water for 3 hours and never needed a reapplication! So, overall the experience was ok but I still would prefer something that does not have the white tint. So, we continued our search for the right mineral sunscreen!
2. Loving Naturals Sunscreen- Clear body SPF 30 ($19.95 on Amazon, 4.3 fl oz)
This sunscreen was my second favorite! The application was great (no complaints from the kids, I will take that as a win any day)! The day that we used it, was 90 degrees and we were in and out of the pool. It did need a reapplication after about an hour. I do this anyway with regular sunscreen, so that did not bother me. The only complaint that I had with it, is that since it goes on completely clear (think gel like) it was hard to tell if I had missed a spot. Otherwise, this is a great mineral sunscreen!
